Editorial: A vote for Richard Neal for Congress is a vote for the future

The Republican Editorials

In his 20-plus years in Congress, U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal has worked overtime for his constituents, his state and his country.

And that’s why residents of the 2nd Congressional District should vote to give Neal another term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

As a member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, Neal has ensured that the region is not a loser in the competition for federal funds vital to promoting economic growth. Some call this pork-barrel spending.

But we wouldn’t call the new $70 million federal courthouse on State Street in Springfield or federal funds for Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge and the Milford Pond restoration pork-barrel projects.

Nor we would call the $5.5 billion federal stimulus funding that kept thousands of people working an example of government pork.

Neal’s opponent, Thomas A. Wesley of Hopedale, has run an impressive, issues-based campaign.

But Wesley argues that the farther you travel from Springfield, Neal’s influence declines. We think it implies that Western Massachusetts won’t count for much with Wesley in Congress.

In tough economic times like these, we need the skills of an experienced congressman. That congressman is Richard E. Neal.

He will watch out for every community in his district - be it Springfield or Hopedale.
