DELIVERING FOR THE FIRST DISTRICT
Richie has continued fighting for his constituents in western and central Massachusetts, prioritizing regional equity and ensuring our region receives its fair share of funding.
Richie has been a champion of improving and expanding passenger rail service between Pittsfield, Springfield, Worcester, and Boston. In September 2023, he joined Governor Healey to announce $108 million in federal funding to support East-West Rail – the third-largest award in the nation and a significant step towards making East-West Rail a reality.
This funding was made available through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, much of which was drafted in the Ways and Means Committee while Richie was Chairman. In addition to funding for passenger rail, the First District has received more than 70 awards totaling more than $200 million from the Infrastructure Law, supporting projects across two dozen cities and towns. This funding supports much-needed upgrades to major roadways, maintenance and reconstruction of bridges, and investments in clean energy and climate-friendly initiatives.
“Improving and expanding passenger rail service will have a tremendous impact on regional economies throughout Massachusetts.”
- Rep. Richie Neal
Richie also celebrated a vital partner and key contributor to the western Massachusetts economy. In May 2023, he announced that Barnes Air National Guard Base will be receiving a new fleet of F-35A Lightning II aircraft beginning in 2026. After years of advocating alongside the Massachusetts Delegation, state leadership, and Adjutant General for the Massachusetts National Guard Gary Keefe, Richie was proud to celebrate an announcement that will ensure that the 104th Fighter Wing can continue its mission for years to come.
Richie also celebrated the reopening of North Adams Regional Hospital. He worked alongside the Biden Administration to advocate for changes relative to the Critical Access Hospital Designation, paving the way for the hospital to reopen. This will improve and expand much-needed healthcare access for the people of North County, ensure the safety and well-being of residents, and create ample job opportunities throughout the Berkshires.
Congressman Neal has also brought back more than $23 million in funding for Community Projects. These projects will directly benefit the First Congressional District of Massachusetts.
